This is not the time to back one AI horse

By Sean Blakeley·2 min read

A lot of technologists are currently being forced to make decisions, declarations, and builds around AI that they are simply not ready to make.

The dust hasn’t settled. The patterns have barely emerged. Yet many companies are driven by the fear of missing out, and are jumping on the bandwagon of rapid AI adoption.

I recently became aware of a company consolidating almost all of its AI spend into a single coding tool. I understand the urge - remove the chaos and the noise - back one horse and get one invoice.

But this is not the time to be putting all your eggs into a single basket; often a single proprietary, closed piece of software.

When a market is in flux, sometimes you have to embrace the chaos, because it is from that chaos that deeper understanding emerges. You can start to see the patterns, and you start to make better, more informed decisions.

But you can’t do that with an early, single vendor lock-in.

Personally, I’m on the same journey. I’ve been loyal to Anthropic for 18 months, and now I’m challenging myself. I don’t want to build my understanding of AI around any single provider’s proprietary infrastructure, because then I’m locked in.

You can’t do that with an early, single vendor lock-in.

This is the moment to have the flexibility to learn, to understand, to observe, and to see how this plays out. Don’t limit your potential by locking yourself and your company into one ecosystem.
