Privacy
What this site collects, and why.
Short version: very little. No advertising, no tracking scripts, and no cookies except the spam check on the contact form.
Who I am. This is the personal site of Sean Blakeley, in the UK. I decide what happens to any personal data the site collects. If you have a question, use the contact page.
The newsletter. If you sign up, I keep your email address so I can send you the weekly email. Kit (kit.com) sends it for me and stores the list. Every email has a link to leave, and leaving deletes you from the list. The legal basis is your consent.
The contact form. If you send a message, I get your name, email, organisation (if you add one) and your message. I use them only to reply. Netlify, which hosts the site, passes the form to me. I keep messages only as long as the conversation needs them. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in answering you.
Spam check. The contact form uses Google reCAPTCHA to stop spam. It loads only on the contact page. Google collects details such as your IP address and how you use the page, and may set a cookie, to tell people from bots. Google's privacy policy covers this. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in keeping the form free of spam.
Hosting. Netlify hosts the site. Like any web server, it records basic technical details of each visit, such as your IP address and browser, to keep the site running and secure.
Visit counts. When the server sends you a page, it records the page, the date and time, whether it worked, roughly where you came from (for example a search engine or LinkedIn) and whether the visit came from a person or a bot. To count people roughly once a day, it mixes your IP address and browser name with a random value that changes every day, and keeps only the scrambled result. Your IP address is never stored. The daily value is deleted after its day, so after that the result cannot be traced back to you. Netlify stores these records for me, only I can read them, and I keep them for 90 days. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in knowing which pages help people.
AI agents. AI agents are first-class readers. They get the same welcome and the same words as people, I track none of them and I block none of them. Their visits, and reads of my files for agents, are counted in the same way as page views above.
Fonts and videos. The site's fonts come from this site, not from Google. Talk videos come from YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, and they load only when you press play.
Offline reading. Your browser can save copies of the pages on your own device so the site works offline. That copy stays on your device. Clear your browser's site data to remove it.
Your rights. You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal data I hold about you, or object to how I use it. Ask through the contact page. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Changes. If this changes, I will update this page. Last updated October 2026.
